Papillon Pathways focuses on the development and implementation of robust ethics governance frameworks addressing the full spectrum of ethical, legal, and societal implications (ELSI), ensuring alignment with European and international standards. Through targeted consultancy, Papillon Pathways supports institutions such as research infrastructures, universities, or scientific enterprises in navigating complex regulatory environments, anticipating emerging ethical challenges, and embedding responsible research and innovation (RRI) practices.

Expertise

Expertise is offered in the context of (trans)national and interdisciplinary collaborations, where tailored approaches strengthen ethical oversight and responsible governance across diverse and complex research ecosystems. The idea to start Papillon Pathways grew from first-hand experience that regulatory support is often centred on technical requirements and ethico-legal compliance. While compliance is a necessary foundation, it is not the same as effective governance, nor is it sufficient to drive structural change. Papillon Pathways therefore goes beyond compliance-focused approaches, providing specialised governance expertise to help research infrastructures, universities, and scientific enterprises translate ethical and legal principles into organisational structures, processes, and decision-making.

Methodology

The methodological approach is grounded in qualitative research and employs a range of participatory methods, including stakeholder interviews, surveys, ethnographic observations, focus groups, and co-creation workshops. These methods enable the integration of diverse perspectives, enhance the robustness of findings, and minimise bias. Papillon Pathways delivers evidence-based insights to inform both policy and practice in ethics governance. By combining methodological rigour with participatory design, it supports to co-develop governance mechanisms that are legally compliant, socially legitimate, context-sensitive, and adaptable to evolving challenges. Consultancy and research activities are reflected in a growing body of publications.
